Modern terrorist acts are every bit as violent as those of the past, but they have become more sophisticated because of the advanced technology available to the terrorists.  Several groups have pioneered new techniques of assault and holding of captives, and when these techniques prove successful, other groups will imitate them, further enhancing the groups’ capabilities.  Knowledge and understanding of what goes into the planning and conduct of a terrorist operation are essential to preventing future attacks.
